Trenchless Technology aids learning
Using their Trenchless Technology System drainage specialists S P Holding Group, in June this year, completed a manhole re-lining project for Carillion Plc to solve a problem the client was experiencing on a PFI School project in the North of England. Specifically, construction on a former landfill site was subject to delay as a result of groundwater entering through a 15 metre deep brickwork access shaft. The problem was compounded by the discovery of extensive Calcium build up on brickwork, which required further work to provide a clean substrate prior to lining.
The M-COATING centrifugal spray process utilised by S P Holding, developed by Hermes Technologies Ltd is the only such process to hold DiBT approval. The process, also approved for use in drinking water situations comprises cleaning, sealing off leaks, injection and coating and delivers fully automated shaft cleaning using high-pressure water jets. This technique negates the requirement for personnel to enter the shaft as the complete procedure is observed from outside the shaft. S P Holding have utilised this Trenchless Technology system for a range of clients including the Diageo Guinness bottling plant and Utility clients including Thames Water and Severn Trent Water.
David Henderson of SP Holding says, “with regard to the Carillion PFI School project the Environment Agency would only allow discharge consent to the existing low level surface water subject to the shaft being re-lined. Firstly we cleaned using high pressure water to remove any debris then, following the removal of the discovered Calcium deposits we spray coated to a thickness of 20mm with cementitious Ergelit KS1 Mortar. The automated Trenchless Technology system offers real benefits in terms of time-cost savings, to hand apply would have taken approximately three weeks. Health and safety issues are also less of a concern as it is not necessary to place personnel within the harsh working environment. Use of this system enabled us to complete the work within one week from arrival on site.”
The M-COATING process compliments a range of Trenchless Technology solutions provided by SP Holding Drainage Services, which include CIPP lining, localised patch repairs, HPWJ precision root and concrete removal cutting and CCTV surveys.
